about this ebook

We’ve all heard of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. Enter it’s startup cousin: The Happy Startup Canvas. It’s here to help a struggling startup founder go from “I’m building X” to “Here’s how X is going to change the world”.

Purpose: Based on Simon Sinek’s famous TED talk, this section helps you get clear about your why (and make sure it’s more than money)

Vision: Look at your purpose and ask yourself how the world will be different when you’re done? After you fulfill your purpose, what will the world look like?

Values: Values are more than something you put on a wall. They’re what guide your every decision. What matters to you more than profits?

Story: Humans are hardwired to love stories. What’s yours? Is it one people can connect with?

Problems: What problem is your startup going to solve? Go back to your vision and purpose and think about what problems align with those

Solution: Keep it simple, focus on learning and get ready to have all your plans destroyed

Fans: Find the people who care, like really care and learn as much as you can about them

Value Proposition: Formulate a pitch that tells your fans how your solution is going to solve their problem

What we loved:

Cool and illustrative examples from the real world as well as the DIY templates for tied to each chapter

What we didn't love:

Some of the points being made contradicted each other, so things felt a bit cherry-picked

Summary:

This is an ebook early startup founders and young entrepreneurs can appreciate. It's less about what makes a startup matter, and more of a guide for you to build (or rebuild) a startup around the question, What matters to you?

In the end though, it's tough to feel totally empowered. Where do we go from here? We're left with the feeling our next step might be to join The Happy Startup School. Great marketing and an excellent pep talk, but we'd rather some more actionable advice at the end to take us from philosophy to real-world impact. Isn’t that the worst trap a startup founder can fall into? Focusing too much on the philosophy?
