you should read this ebook if...

  • You work on (or informally lead) projects as a member of a team
  • You want to improve your communication and general leadership skills
  • You're interested in basic project methodologies and want to learn when you should use one over the other

about this ebook

Managing a project takes emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and a mindset that’s organized but adaptable. You need impeccable communication to get across a project’s expectations and structure. These will vary based on your project methodology. A waterfall framework is linear and sequential, with extensive pre-planning and documentation, and little room for deviation. Agile moves quickly and collaboratively, with small teams led by scrum masters, and limited ability to scale. Most teams will need a combination of both project management structures.

What we loved:

This skimmable, scannable free ebook on what it takes to be a project manager got to the point quickly and didn't go deep into theory

What we didn't love:

We wish this free ebook had a bit more in the way of get-your-hands-dirty actionable elements to help the non-project managers adopt some of the traits of the best project managers.

Summary:

Project management isn't just the latest buzzword trend. It's a real need for companies everywhere. This quick and dirty guide will give you a high-level overview of how the best project managers approach the projects they deal with.

After reading it, you'll have a solid understanding of when (and how) to use a few of the most popular project methodologies like waterfall and agile. You'll also get a look into what makes great project managers great (it's more than the organizational skills) and what the future holds for project management.

Shockingly, there wasn’t a table of contents, although there were some navigational elements that made it easy to interact with. We wish the section on what makes a great project manager had some tips straight from expert project managers and overall we would have liked to have seen some project management templates and worksheets for all the non-project managers among us.

Still, this free ebook is such an easy read, there's no reason not to at least give it a skim.
